The Starting Point
God’s message to Jonah was unmistakable: go east, deliver judgment to Nineveh.
Jonah 1:1-3 (NLT) – “The Lord gave this message to Jonah son of Amittai: ‘Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are.’ But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord. He went down to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on board, hoping to escape from the Lord by sailing to Tarshish.”
God said go east. Jonah went west. That’s Kingdom misalignment.
INFORMATION: The Story of Jonah
1. Disobedience Has Ripple Effects
- Jonah 1:4-5 (NLT) – “But the Lord hurled a powerful wind over the sea, causing a violent storm that threatened to break the ship apart. Fearing for their lives, the desperate sailors shouted to their gods for help and threw the cargo overboard to lighten the ship.”
- Others got caught in the storm Jonah’s running created
- The next one God wants to reach through you—they’re waiting
2. God Is Patient, But Persistent
- Jonah 2:1-2 (NLT) – “Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from inside the fish. He said, ‘I cried out to the Lord in my great trouble, and he answered me. I called to you from the land of the dead, and Lord, you heard me!'”
- You can make room for God now—or wait. But God will get your attention
3. What Happens When We Finally Obey
- Jonah 3:4-5 (NLT) – “On the day Jonah entered the city, he shouted to the crowds: ‘Forty days from now Nineveh will be destroyed!’ The people of Nineveh believed God’s message, and from the greatest to the least, they declared a fast and put on burlap to show their sorrow.”
- One day. One message. An entire city
Theological Foundation: Your obedience isn’t optional when someone else’s freedom is connected to it.
INSPIRATION: This Was Never Just About Jonah
Jonah thought the story was about him—his comfort. But it was about 120,000 people who needed God’s mercy.
That’s the Father’s heart. That’s being Sent Ones—sent on a mission bigger than our comfort.
Matthew 12:40-41 (NLT) – “For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. The people of Nineveh will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than Jonah is here—but you refuse to repent.”
Three days in darkness—then breakthrough. Running and returning.
The Heart Issue: Jonah didn’t think they deserved mercy. Sometimes we hesitate for the same reason.
But the Father’s heart isn’t about who deserves it—it’s about who needs it.
Jonah preached eight words. Zero enthusiasm. The whole city repented. God doesn’t need your perfect attitude. He needs your availability.
MOTIVATION: Overcoming What Keeps You Stuck
Obstacle 1: “I don’t feel qualified”
- Neither did Jonah. The enemy is invested in keeping you pointed the wrong direction
- 1 Corinthians 1:27 (NLT) – “Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful.”
- God doesn’t call the qualified. He qualifies the called
Obstacle 2: “What if nothing happens?”
- Then you still obeyed. You’re responsible for the step, not the outcome
- Isaiah 55:11 (NLT) – “It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.”
TRANSFORMATION: Metanoia—Change Your Direction
Matthew 6:33 (NLT) – “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”
Kingdom Alignment starts the moment you say yes. Not next week. Today.
Three Steps This Week:
- Name what you’re running from
- Ask a Pastor or Elder to pray with you
- Take one step—make the call, send the text, have the conversation
When breakthrough comes, tell someone. Your story gives someone else courage to stop running.
