Submission & Authority in God’s House
I. MUTUAL SUBMISSION – EVERYONE SUBMITS TO SOMEONE
Ephesians 5:21 (NLT) – “And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”
—This isn’t:
- Fear of punishment from Christ
- Blind obedience to human authority
- Submission because people deserve it
—This is:
- Respect for Christ’s design for relationships
- Trust that God’s way leads to human flourishing
- Recognition that Christ is the ultimate authority over all relationships
II. AUTHORITY AS SERVICE – LEADERSHIP MEANS LAYING DOWN YOUR LIFE
1 Peter 5:1-7 (NLT) – “And now, a word to you who are elders in the churches. I, too, am an elder and a witness to the sufferings of Christ. And I, too, will share in his glory when he is revealed to the whole world. As a fellow elder, I appeal to you: 2 Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. 3 Don’t lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. 4 And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor. 5 In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. 7 Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.”
What Biblical Authority IS:
- Servant leadership: Using power to serve others’ good
- Example setting: Leading by demonstration, not just declaration
- Protective: Creating safety for those under your care
- Accountable: Answerable to God for how you treat people
Mark 10:42-45 (NLT): “But Jesus called them together and said, ‘You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.'”
What Biblical Authority IS NOT:
- Lording over: Using position for personal advantage
- Demanding service: Expecting others to meet your needs
- Controlling: Micromanaging
- Self-serving: Using authority for personal gain
III. THE PROTECTION OF STRUCTURE
Hebrews 13:17 (NLT) – “Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit.”
Biblical Authority Functions Like:
- A shepherd protecting sheep from wolves
- A parent protecting children from danger
- A lifeguard watching for threats others might not see
- A lighthouse providing guidance for safe navigation
