Have you ever done the math on somebody else’s blessing? Watched someone get the job, the breakthrough, the answered prayer — and thought, why them and not me? Most of us are running a calculator in the back of our minds, keeping score on whether God is being fair. Jesus told a story to break that calculator. Not bend it. Break it.
INFORMATION: The Workers in the Vineyard
Matthew 20:9-15 (NLT): “When those hired first came to get their pay, they assumed they would receive more. But they, too, were paid a single silver coin. When they received their pay, they protested to the owner, ‘Those people worked only one hour, and yet you’ve paid them the same as us who worked all day in the scorching heat.’ He answered one of them, ‘Friend, I haven’t been unfair! Didn’t you agree to work all day for the usual wage? Take your money and go. I wanted to pay this last worker the same as you. Is it against the law for me to do what I want with my own money? Should you be jealous because I am kind to others?'”
Three things from this passage:
1. You Get What You Deserve — That’s the Lie
- Most of us have been taught you only get what you earn — until grace shows up and refuses to play by that rule.
- “He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.” — Titus 3:5 (NLT)
2. The Wage Was Never About the Hours
- The landowner isn’t bending a rule for the latecomers — he’s simply being who he already is.
- “Is it against the law for me to do what I want with my own money? Should you be jealous because I am kind to others?” — Matthew 20:15 (NLT)
3. Work and Effort Positions You — It Doesn’t Grow You
- Working the field matters, but growing it was never in the worker’s hands.
- “I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow… For we are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field.” — 1 Corinthians 3:6-9 (NLT)
INSPIRATION: Grace Isn’t Fair — And That’s the Good News
The moment you stop measuring your blessing against somebody else’s is the moment you start receiving what grace actually has for you.
- There is no leaderboard in grace. It ends the exhausting comparison game and frees you from earning what you already have.
- “When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something they have earned. But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners.” — Romans 4:4-5 (NLT)
MOTIVATION: What’s Really Holding You Back
Obstacle 1: “I’ve Worked Harder for This Than They Have”
- That instinct isn’t a character flaw — it’s the very door grace came to unlock.
- “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.” — Ephesians 2:8-9 (NLT)
Obstacle 2: “If Everyone Gets Grace Anyway, Why Even Try?”
- Planting and watering are still real labor with a real reward — you’re just not carrying the weight of producing what only God can produce.
- “The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work.” — 1 Corinthians 3:8 (NLT)
TRANSFORMATION: Embracing the Father’s Grace
THREE CALLS TO ACTION:
- Today: Name one specific place you’ve been measuring your blessing against somebody else’s hours — release it to God by name.
- This week: Thank God every day for one specific thing that came to you by grace, not by your own sweat.
- This month: Find someone who feels like they’re “running out of time” and remind them — the Father’s math was never counting their hours.
