OPENING

Acts 1:4-5 (NLT) — “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

INFORMATION: Coming Together In Community

Acts 2:1-4 (NLT) — “On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.”

Three things in these verses we don’t want to miss:

1. They Were All Together Unity and prayer create the atmosphere for God to move.

Acts 13:2 (NLT) — “One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Appoint Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them.'”

2. They Received the Holy Spirit The gift wasn’t reserved for a select few — it settled on each of them.

Matthew 18:20 (NLT) — “For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.”

3. Holy Spirit Gave Them Power When Holy Spirit moves in community, voices are empowered and released into their calling.

Acts 2:14 (NLT) — “Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd…”

INSPIRATION: This Gift Is For You

1. Jesus Promised to Send Holy Spirit

‭‭John‬ ‭14‬:‭15‬-‭17‬ ‭NLT‬‬ If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.”

2. The Invitation Has No Expiration Date

Acts 2:38-39 (NLT) — “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away — all who have been called by the Lord our God.”

MOTIVATION: The Gift Requires Response

Jesus is the Living Water

John‬ ‭7‬:‭38‬-‭39‬ ‭NLT‬‬ “Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’” (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)”

To receive we must respond

Acts 2:41 (NLT) — “Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day — about 3,000 in all.”

TRANSFORMATION: The Invitation To Receive Power

THREE CALLS TO ACTION:

  1. Receive — Show up, worship, and pray. Not just on Sundays. Get connected in a group, come to a Night of Worship (first Wednesday of every month — next one is June 3 @6pm), find your people inside this family.
  2. Share — If God has done something amazing in your life, it’s to your benefit but not for your benefit. Share it with someone else so they can experience the same freedom you have.
  3. Invite — Think of one person right now who needs to be in a room where God moves. Invite them to come home to the Father.
