Jesus – In Culture (Morals & Ethics)

Sunday, January 28, 2024

Definitions:

Ethics: a set of moral principles : a theory or system of moral values

Morals: of or relating to principles of right and wrong in behavior

Principles: a comprehensive and fundamental law, doctrine, or assumption. A rule or code of conduct.

(Worldly Culture) Moral relativism asserts that morality is not based on any absolute standard. Rather, ethical “truths” depend on variables such as the situation, culture, one’s feelings, etc.

(Kingdom Culture) Jesus asserts that morality is based on an absolute standard. That all truth is based on Himself…

I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. ‭‭John‬ ‭14‬:‭6‬ NLT

If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. John‬ 14:‭‭15‬-‭17‬ NLT

But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. ‭‭John‬ 14:‭‭26‬ ‭NLT‬‬

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. ‭‭John‬ ‭16‬:‭13‬-‭14‬ ‭NLT‬‬

How we relate to others

(Worldly Culture) Principle: Live and let live: You should let other people behave in the way that they want to and not criticize them for behaving differently from you.

(Kingdom Culture) Principle: You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭14‬-‭16‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The world says vs Kingdom Culture – God’s Goodness, Love, Kindness but it’s not without a personal cost

How we relate to God

(Worldly Culture) Principle: Trust your heart and do what makes you happy

(Kingdom Culture) Principle: Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭33‬ ‭NLT‬‬

How we live our life

(Worldly Culture) Principle: Believe in yourself

(Kingdom Culture) Principle: Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to follow Me[as My disciple], he must deny himself [set aside selfish interests], and take up his cross [expressing a willingness to endure whatever may come] and follow Me [believing in Me, conforming to My example in living and, if need be, suffering or perhaps dying because of faith in Me]. Matthew 16:24 (AMP)
